The Green Care Lab was founded in the summer of 2022 by Dr. Rebecca Calisi-Rodríguez, a Professor of Animal Behavior and Neurobiology at UC Davis, in collaboration with Matt and Michelle Haseltine, the owners of Pine Trails Ranch. We are looking for dependable community members to help us provide consistent, exceptional care and support for our animal residents and thriving garden plots.

Your dedication to our mission as a volunteer is highly valued and greatly appreciated. We want to provide some important context regarding our volunteer program. Training individuals to work effectively in our gardens and with our animals is a time-intensive process. Given our limited resources, we must prioritize efficiency in our training efforts. Therefore, we kindly request that volunteers commit to dedicating at least one day per week for a minimum of four months.
|
This extended commitment serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it allows our animals the time they need to adjust to new human interactions, promoting their well-being and safety. Secondly, it ensures that our training efforts are maximally effective, as frequent turnover can be counterproductive. Lastly, it enables volunteers to form meaningful bonds with our animals, which is not only rewarding but also greatly benefits our program. Your dedication and reliability in consistently showing up are essential to the success of our volunteer program. We sincerely appreciate your understanding of this request and your commitment to making a positive impact on our mission.
Animal Care Volunteers:
Our mini horses, donkeys, pigs and goats may be small and endearing, but some can weigh over 400 pounds! Occasionally, they can become playfully rambunctious, which, although charming, could pose risks to individuals unfamiliar with farm animals. Several of our rescue animals have endured challenging pasts, and while our dedicated team works diligently to rehabilitate and resocialize them, we require volunteers who can provide the utmost care, patience, and safety. For these reasons, we cannot accept volunteers under the age of 16.
Volunteer Responsibilities: Our dedicated volunteers play a pivotal role in maintaining our sanctuary. Tasks may include:
What NOT to Wear:

Dress Code: Our site is a work in progress. As we embark on this journey, volunteers should expect a range of environmental conditions, from dirt and construction to uneven ground, bugs, mud, sweltering summer heat, and occasional rain during the winter and spring. And yes, there will be plenty of animal care, including handling waste. Therefore, we kindly request that volunteers adhere to the following clothing guidelines:

Join us in nurturing vibrant gardens that serve as living sanctuaries for horticulture-human connections. These lush spaces encompass both bountiful food-producing plots and thriving havens teeming with California's native flora. We invite passionate gardeners to embark on this transformative journey with us.
